DataOne Connection that is always ON

This is a quick guide on How to enable connection to the Internet that is always ON, for users with DataOne BSNL Broadband and Huwaie MT882 Modem

My problem was: I always used the “dial-to-connect” method for accessing net. and now since my PC would wake up from hibernation, dialing to connect would be a problem, so I needed the net to always ON. but somehow every time I chose the option “always on” while creating a new connection in the Connection Wizard of XP, it said ‘Your Internet is already configured..’ some crap like that, while it was not, because I couldn’t access the net.

I always had both the USB cable and the Ethernet cable plugged in. Had no idea through which my PC used.

So this time I decided to yank out the USB and use just the Ethernet, since anyway there is no support via PPPoA on Linux. (I dual boot)

Go to http://192.168.1.1 in your browser and login with the

username : admin

password : admin

Click on WAN settings to your left.

Here the ’PVC-0′ settings have to be altered a bit.

WAN TYPE should be set to > “PPP”

Connection Type, set to > “PPPoE”

Encap > “LLC”

Default Route > “Enabled”

Username > yourusername@dataone

Password > yourpassword

Use DNS > “Enabled”

Max Idle Time checked to > “Always On”

Click on Save and Reboot and wait for your modem to completely reboot and of course the page displaying “Wait modem rebooting in x minutes” should lead you back to the WAN settings / modem page.

I wrote this little tutorial because as far as I know there isn’t one explicitly explaining the same for newbies. Hope it helps :)

10 Clipboard Managers (part 1)

Clipboard managers are one of my “must have” softwares. The windows clipboard is useful but, if you copy anything, the current contents of the clipboard is lost. This is especially annoying in advanced text editing or code editing, where you accidentally overwrite the clipboard, and is a huge inconvenience. Linux users use Klipper and other utilities which allow them to paste from a small number of text files in a clipboard buffer. There are a few alternatives, though.

Clean up firefox menus

Anyone who uses firefox installs extensions. The trouble with extension developers is that each one thinks his/her addon is the most important and needs to have a right click option. Eventually you have so many items in your right click it’s near impossible to find a copy or paste option. Also a lot of menu items like the “send this page”, etc, are often not required. Fortunately, there is an easy way to clean things up.
