The world loved it when Ubuntu evolved to simplicity in its operation and management squeezing in effortlessly into PCs. Now, the installation of software is easier thanks to apthandler, which adds a protocol handler for apt. This allows you to click on a link, and the software is installed by the backend.
Although its another story when day-to-day learning process required one to Google for solutions to mind boggling errors in the terminal or simply when the icon just wasn’t there ;/
How nice it would be if it were point, click (may be a couple more) and install! and here’ s an excerpt for the curious…
The functioning of this tool is as simple as its idea. If you are interested in testing this new feature and are already testing the Ubuntu Gutsy, all you need to do is to install the package ‘apturl‘ from universe repository. For those normal people who do not want to test gutsy yet, I made this package for Ubuntu Feisty and Debian Etch. After installed, you can try it by clicking on the amule logo at the begin of the post, or just use the apturl binary to play stand-alone.

Isn’t point-click-install what Synaptic does?
Hey, I edited the article a bit, hope you don’t mind.
okay. why does the “noteworthy” category make it get a heart?
i dont get what problem this tool solves .We have synaptic which does exactly this
Oh, I get it now. It’s like the ymsgr or aim protocol handlers we see ever so often. However, on the long run, how much time and effort does this really save? There’re also the risks that come with installing packages from new/untrusted websites.
BINGO! thats what they meant to do
wouldnt be particularly useful to people who know how to use the terminal, but for noobs used to windows point and clickey click feture to install, it would a nice feature.
